What “mobile first” actually means for a business site
Mobile first is a design order — start with the small screen — not a checkbox that says “it works on phones.”
Start where most people are
For many industries, the majority of visits arrive on a phone. Designing the essential path there first forces clearer headlines, bigger tap targets, and less clutter.
Then expand, don’t shrink
Desktop should add breathing room and secondary detail — not be the only place the site makes sense. Shrinking a busy desktop layout is how you get tiny type and accidental taps.
Test like a visitor
Thumb reach, form fields, sticky bars, and image weight all show up on device. Modern tools and advanced code help, but only if someone actually taps through the journey on a real phone before launch.
